The cremaster cycle

March 25, 2003

Mathew Barney (Bjork’s baby’s daddy) is on top of the art world with his celebrated five-film series called “Cremaster Cycle.”

The name refers to the cremaster muscle, which raises or lowers the testes in response to temperature, stimulation or fear. Barney explores human gender differentiation from the womb to the external world using sculpture, photography and cinema in each of the five elaborate installations that make up the series. Coming to SFMOMA in May.
