War games
February 26, 2003
The Paintball World Series was held in Huntington Beach, drawing over 100,000 spectators. Some argue that all competitive sports are, at their roots, ways to fulfill primal instincts toward tribal warfare within the constraints of modern civilized life. As video games are trying harder to approximate the experience of war, paintball is taking this approximation to its extreme, for those who can afford it. Chuck Hendsch, president of the National Professional Paintball League said “each guy out here today is probably wearing $3,000 worth of equipment. It’s kind of like golf that way.” The average paintballer is 24-years old with an income of $70,000 a year.
