Painting pictures with data

November 17, 2005

With marketing becoming increasingly focused on ROI, it would be easy to think that fun is being driven out of the business. Fear not, because even analytics can have be turned into something pleasurable. VisitorVille is a software program to measure web traffic statistics, but instead of boring number charts and graphs, it translates the data into city-based visual metaphors.

The software allows you to:

- see buses (search engines) deliver visitors to buildings
- see buildings shrink and grow according to the number of visitors

Alhough VisitorVille might seem a little over-the-top, you can see its appeal as it is becoming essential to bring creativity to the presentation of data.

Perhaps it’s time to send your data analyst on a Tufte course.
