A new community for parents

March 20, 2006

Influx recently discovered a new community concept for parents with kids up to age 6. Urban Monkeys, described as “a jungle for kids, an oasis for adults,” opened in the South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle last September. The light, airy loft houses a playroom, two movement studios, a spa, a wireless lounge and a small retail area.

Urban Monkeys matches the mindset of the modern mom seeking experiential learning for her kids, time to take care of herself, and ways to connect with other moms. The unique space lets it all happen at once. Moms can choose to play with their kids in the gym, get a quick spa treatment, catch up on email, or simply relax and talk with other Moms.

The concept works well because it sees things from both the moms’ and the kids’ perspectives. It gives them each a space to be individuals, as well as a space to connect together. It sounds like plans may be in the works for expanding – first within Seattle, then to places like Portland and San Francisco.
