The hidden benefit of the new nintendo console
November 18, 2006
Some critics blame video games for creating a generation of lazy and unfit youngsters.
Scientific American suggests that Nintendo’s new console may well have reversed that trend with the Wii.
This idea comes from a Business Week article that mentions Nintendo testing the console with employee’s kids. One executive quoted states “My son is a second grader. He loved it. After playing, he was completely drenched in sweat.”
The interesting thing about the Wii is that it’s a great example of category disruption. While other players were adding more power to consoles to push richer and more realistic graphics, Nintendo realized there was another way to look at gaming and changed the experience from smashing buttons to real physical activity.
This could work wonders for Nintendo this holiday season; this will be the first time parents will have had a reason to justify the purchase of a gaming console.
This film shows just how physical the Wii is.
