At the LIFT06 conference yesterday, Stefana Broadband, an ethnologist working for Swisscom Innovations, presented the results of her study into the role different communication channels.

She explained the discrete role of each channel as follows:

Fixed phone- The Collective Channel- a shared organizer for the family
Mobile voice- The Micro-Co-Ordination Channel- the channel for last minute adjustments
SMS- The Intimate Channel
IM and VOIP- The Continuous Channel
Blogging- The Networking Channel

This is a nice, clear and elegant way of segmenting the role of communication, that Influx has not done justice to here.
