The science brand has a problem (revisited)

February 8, 2006

Time Magazine has a cover story this week about the state of science in the US and also deals with the image problem of science in schools.

Many people believe that science and technology are the future growth engines of the developed world. However, it appears that scientists may have a bit of an image problem. At least that’s what recent research amongst UK kids discovered.

Researchers questioned 11.000 kids about their perceptions and impressions of scientists and they discovered some alarming results; 70% not picturing scientists as normal young and attractive men and women and reasons given for not choosing science as a career included “because you would constantly be depressed and tired and not have time for family”, and “because they all wear big glasses and white coats and I am female”.

Any ideas on how science’s image could be improved?
