The day clip culture caught fire

July 11, 2006

While billions worldwide tuned into their television sets for the World Cup final, where aside from Italy’s victory, the main talking point was Zidane’s headbutt and subsequent red card.

Post game, people are tuning into You Tube. This clip dominates You Tube, commanding 7 of the top 20 most viewed clips today.

The leading clip already has 1.4 million views.

Here’s one clip from an unusual angle

It has all the characteristics of an ideal clip.

1. It shocks
2. It surprises
3. It’s something you’ve rarely seen before
4. It’s highly controversial
5. It has huge talk value
6. People want to know what’s behind it

Interestingly, it’s an example of the power of old media and new media coming together; old media transmitted it to billions and new media clip culture spreads it and builds upon it.

More importantly, it shows that although declining in number, true water cooler moments still exist.
