Americans and their cars

May 17, 2008

Something big is happening right now.

For the first time, Americans appear to be using their cars less. Looking back at data from the Federal Highways Administration that tracks distance traveled, we can see the first ever decline in miles traveled since the data series started in 1983.

This indicates the real impact of gas prices on behavior and is a signal of a revolution that’s happening in the car market. America appears to be shifting away from the domination of SUVs to the more appropriate compact car.

It was only a few years ago, when people said this would never happen and proves
that the most powerful force of change is rising prices.
