Manufacturing coming back to the city
March 23, 2010
David Benque’s project for the Impact exhibition at the Royal College of Art, shows an alternative perspective on the return of manufacturing to cities.
While it’s assumed by expert commentators that rising oil prices could make it viable to re-open cities up to manufacturing in the traditional sense, Benque has a very different opinion.
He uses the travelling fairground as an inspiration and sees a world where manufacturing facilities are small scale and movable.
Imagine street vendors transformed into personal fabricators.
Benque’s suggestions don’t seem so far fetched given the recent availability of affordable 3D printers.
