The internet’s impact on hierarchies
February 27, 2011
Ben Hammersley of Wired UK talking at the LIFT conference about how the internet has changed as is changing and transforming the concept of hierarchies.
He explains how we are ruled and governed by meaningless structures and rule sets and why for global and business leaders, the shift away from this framework is so shocking.
He also highlights how the concept of “Innovation” has become a “self-help book” for people looking for a way to cope with the transition.
A couple of Ben’s soundbites.
“Al Qaeda is an email list with a weapons budget”
“It’s very difficult to shoot a hashtag”
The problem is for the people in the generational middle who stand between those who don’t understand hierarchies and those who’ve based their beliefs and lives around them.
Their problem is that they lack the “cognitive toolkit” to process, so the problem isn’t about innovation, it’s translation and translating and that’s the job for the generation that lies between to leaders and Generation D.
