With house prices continuing to escalate in many parts of the country, some buyers are looking at potential alternatives. One solution is the prefabricated home that had something of a tarnished reputation until fairly recently. Turning the pre-fab into a cool concept will be helped by Dwell. The magazine recently announced that they were moving into this space. It's a natural fit for a brand that's spread the gospel on modernist living for the past few years and it gives perspective homebuyers the confidence that a trusted brand is behind the home.

Dwell has teamed up with Empyrean for the project, but the original idea was spawned by an architectural competition the magazine ran in 2004. The winning design was made into an open house that attracted a great deal of interest. Dwell is offering three home designs and is promoting them through a series of seminars around the country.

Given the current housing crisis and a generation of buyers who are looking for something that's both affordable and a little un-conventional, other brands might want to step in. Sunset Magazine has a clean and green home, Ikea just launched pre-fab homes in Scotland and trendy Japanese retailer Muji has an apartment project.

Any money on a pre-fab from Target?
