People often feel overwhelmed by the scale of environmental issues and find it hard to understand how their contribution can make a difference. One idea being developed by the UK's Design Council is to get homeowners to rate their homes for energy efficiency. Using a simple online tool, consumers can get ratings for their homes and understand how improvements can impact their efficiency rating. Its killer application lies in being able to see your home's rating in comparison to everyone in your neighborhood, this does two things; it encourages competition and allows consumers to see the collective impact of their neighborhood on the environment.
