Historically, we are used to thinking of Apple as a niche player, it still is in many ways, but its new businesses appear to be scaling pretty fast.

Movies

According to Variety, Apple's move into the movie business appears to be working quite well.

"Studio execs said that iTunes movie sales and rentals -- which the computer company said tops 50,000 daily -- dominate the small but closely watched digital movie biz. Apple is now on track to sell or rent 18.25 million movies a year, or triple the number of last year, before it inked deals with all major studios for new-release rentals and sales."

Phones

Apple placed an order with Samsung for 50 million NAND flash chips. It's basically taken over Samsung's production. The order is so big, Samsung is asking its other customers to wait. A fascinating development when you consider that Samsung also wants to play in the phone wars, but here it is helping a foe with a critical component.

If you live in Redmond, Washington or  South Barrington, Illinois, you could be in for a treat this year with the arrival of Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinemas.

A new concept that takes the movie experience to new heights for a hefty price.

This is the world of luxury movie going.

- 40 seat cinemas
- Luxury reclining arm chairs
- Latest state-of-the-art technology with digital projection, including 3-D, as well as super-wide screens and digital sound

This isn't just a about the movie, it's dinner and the movie since guests can watch their film drink wine and eat gourmet cuisine from the seasonal menu prepared by chefs in the Gold Class kitchen.

If that isn't enough each seat has its own service button which brings personal waiter service.

Given that we live in a world where experiences matter, it makes sense to see an elevation of the movie going experience.

I can't imagine people are going to regularly spend $150 on a movie night out, but for special occasions and to see a great new movie, it's something people would add to their repertoire.

Quentin Tarantino (Death Proof) and Robert Rodriguez's (Planet Terror) Grindhouse double-bill is an ambitious attempt to recreate the classic cheesy horror/thriller movies of the 70s, sadly It's not bringing in the dollars ,the Weinstein brothers hoped for.

So what's right and wrong about it:

Right

Feeling and flavor is fantastic

    Chessy music
    Broken reels
    Missing reels
    Movie trailers
    Fake ads for Mexican restaurants
    Jump cuts

Rodriguez's film- Planet Terror

    Over the top effects
Lots of explosions- blood/ gore and some generally disgusting moments
    Rosie McGowan's machine gun

Wrong

Both movies are too long and sitting for 3 1/2 hours is tough going
Easy to lose interest- both films are too long
Tarantino's Death Proof is not Duel or Vanishing Point
Try to be too faithful to the past- and not fast paced enough for today's movie goers

It's a tough challenge to recreate the past,do it with your tongue firmly in your cheek and expect today's young adult audience to get it. However, amongst movie buffs and real fans of the genre, Grindhouse will become a cult classic and could recoup its $100 million budget with foreign sales and DVDs.
