Look around before you swing open your car door

January 9, 2003

‘Red Light Go’ is an intimate ethnography about an extreme and often overlooked beast: the wild bike messenger. The new documentary follows seven hard-core New York City bike messengers for two years as they compete in their increasingly popular pastime: races called ‘alleycats.’ These brutal and often traumatic contests pit the quirky, somehow lovable, sometimes violent real-life characters against one another, as they speed through rush-hour traffic in pursuit of seemingly measly prizes and the respect of their fellow riders.
