Tintin goes to hollywood

February 10, 2003

Steven Spielberg has announced plans to make a live-action film featuring previously untapped Belgian property TinTin, the cowlick-sporting boy reporter and his ever-faithful dog, Snowy. George Remi, who wrote under the penname, ‘Herge,’ resisted attempts by American production companies to buy his cult-classic TinTin. Since Remi’s death, Belgians have been up in arms that rights to TinTin have been transferred to a British-owned media company now in talks with Dreamworks. Spielberg, who has created several American icons over the years, is sure to encounter resistance if he plans to turn Belgium’s beloved national treasure into another Hollywood-ized, global merchandising franchise.
