Remember the speak and spell?

February 11, 2003

An interesting upshot of the electronic age is that musical instruments can be invented in millions more permutations than were previously thinkable. First there were acoustic instruments, then “electric” ones which were pretty much acoustic with pickups, then came the simulated acoustic instruments like the keyboard. But with electronic music now blossoming, completely independent of acoustic analogs, people are building remarkable new instruments out of even the most unlikely machines. A company called casper electronics is even turning extinct children’s toys like the speak and spell into techno instruments.
