Vision statement of the day- “elves of the internet”-aol

August 5, 2010

Aol’s Tim Armstrong might have been a headline writer or a copywriter in an earlier life, there’s barely a day goes by when he’s not inventing something. Sadly, this invention isn’t about technology, but new semantics to spin the AOL story.

Despite spilling the bad news on his Q2 numbers Armstrong had time to explain the “white space”, or the “Blue Ocean” he wants to seize.

“We need to be the elves for the Internet.” We need crank to surprise
and delight people. We need to create the Internet as should be. It
hasn’t changed much int he past 15 years. “The elves are very very hard
at work right now.”

The problem lies with his choice of Elf, it worried me, so I looked up the definition.

1. A small, often mischievous creature considered to have magical powers.
a. A lively, mischievous child.
b. A usually sprightly or mischievous or sometimes spiteful person.

Put anyone of those in-charge of defining the future of the internet and you might have a problem on your hands.
