It's interesting to hear Jason Fried of 37Signals talk about the problem of the modern workplace where interruptions rule.

He suggests we need new ways to work which gives people the time and space to really work, rather than waste time in meetings.

It seems that there's something of a revolution happening in the workplace with two cultures clashing with each other; one which is "old school" and mired in the values of traditional face-to-face communication and the other "digital school" which is all about finding productive ways to work.

Many in the old school don't understand how the new "digital school" can be productive when they are multitasking there way through the day- interacting with a variety of people, networks and programs without ever leaving their desks.

Roles and responsibilities are also changing
Ed, I'll add some thoughts to the conversation because I think Jason is spot on. I've been talking a lot about the change from a Management Culture to a Production Culture in advertising agencies. We need more people invested in doing and creating and less "thought leaders" and managers. In order to do this we need more T shaped employees. I forget where I got this from, I think it was Frog Design. The idea though is more competency across disciplines but with depth in a particular area. This gets away from the repository of information silo work environments, and into collaboration environments. Work sytles are ultimately odd creatures, complicated by the tension between office politics and creative progress. What I do really appreciate in this video is Jason's F'It we're here to get things done sentiment.
