can gm make a bold move? (42.34636533160187 , -83.05938720703125)
Yesterday in Geneva, GM's Bob Lutz was clearly making the point that GM has every intention of brining its radical electric Volt concept to market and the company has set and internal target date of 2010.
Lutz needed to meet the skeptics head on, those who believed the Volt was a merely a PR stunt for the ailing Detroit automaker, it seems GM can't seem to catch a PR break these days.
Lutz's move sets up GM to deliver on its world and this is precisely the attitude and thinking that GM has got to have if it's going to survive.
It can't back down or wiggle out of this now or can it?
Decades after the EV1 was slaughtered by the company, GM could be back in the race, now that the market has caught up with their original vision.
At least Volt is a tangible manifestation of GM's future. It's not an ad or a brand video, but a mock-up of a real automobile. It might not yet function, but it's a start, something that can get the pulses racing and get employees focused around. Lutz needs to generate some electricity inside GM around this idea.
The benefits are considerable, if GM can produce the Volt for the right price, they could well be back in business. Not by selling one million Volts, but by setting the company up to tackle the future transportation needs of consumers.
