the open-source movement: Mozilla makes gains on Microsoft

Mozilla's Firefox, the open source browser that many analysts have deemed the best of the Internet browsers, has now gained more market share than Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

IE's market share declined 4.9% in the last 6 months to 90.6%, the lowest in three years.

Conversely, Mozilla's Firefox gained 0.9% market shares to nearly 5%, bringing them closer to their now attainable, 10% goal. Since it's release last November, Firefox 1.0 has received approximately 19 million downloads worldwide.

Industry analysts cite lack of update and features in IE as reasons for their decline. They also believe that IE is extremely vulnerable to spyware, which is having a negative impact on the market overall. In short, the perception is that Microsoft hasn't done anything to add new or creative features to its browser since it gained the large extent of the market share.

Firefox was born inside Netscape Communications in 1998 to harness the budding open-source software movement. The idea was that volunteer programmers from around the world would help make improvements to the company's browser.

Firefox's success comes from word of mouth spread by current users. Here are some features that differentiate Firefox.

Pop-up ad blocking
Tabbed browsing - view more than one web page in a single window
Privacy and security - protects your compute from spyware
Smarter search - Google plus more built into the toolbar
Live Bookmarks - RSS integration
Customizable
Developer friendly - comes with JavaScript and other developer tools
