While Starwood tries to re-invent the budget hotel category with a new brand called Aloft, other hoteliers are looking in a completely different direction.

One great example is the Propeller City Lodge in Berlin, Germany. Catering to a youthful and ironic European sensibility, this is no cookie-cutter hotel. Propeller City Lodge prides itself in each of its 30 rooms being a complete one-off, but this isn't just about design, it's about each room providing a unique experience.

The image on the right shows the Grandma room.

Some examples of Propeller's other rooms include:

Coffin

A room with coffins you can sleep in even with the lids down.

Upside Down

The furniture hangs from the ceiling and you sleep and sit in comfortable boxes beneath the floorboards.

Mirror

A diamond-shaped room is full of mirrors and gives you the impression of living in a kaleidoscope.

Prison Cell

A friendly prison cell with a hole in the wall. The toilet is in the room.

Propeller is just the experience for those bored with the predictable formula of the chain boutique hotel.
